Activity #2 - The Next Level!

Mario needs to rescue Princess Peach, however he can’t get to the next level in order to progress. Can you help him out?

Before you begin ...

This hands-on activity uses a free coding platform called "Scratch". Please make sure you've watched our "Introduction to Scratch" video, and that you're signed into your Scratch account. If you need help, click below. Otherwise, skip down to STEP 1 to get started!

Click the button below to open the activity. It will open in a new window/tab which allows you to keep this page open at the same time and easily switch between tabs while you work through this activity.

• After you open the activity, click on the blue "See inside" button to access the activity.
• If you are logged into your Scratch account, then you can click on the green "Remix" button to save this activity to your personal Scratch account so you can save your work and also share it with others!

• Click on the “Pen” sprite to help Mario out.
• By using the existing blocks, and adding in a loop (repeat block), edit the code in the first section so that the pen draws a staircase to allow Mario to get to the next level.
• Remember, you can activate your code in the first section by pressing the “1” key on your keyboard.

When you’ve reached level 2 (green level), watch the next video below.

• You’ll notice that this level needs a different staircase in order to get past the spinning fire obstacle. Carefully set up your staircase in the second section of code so that Mario can reach the next level.
• Remember to press the “2” key on your keyboard to activate your second staircase in this new section of code.

Watch the next video when you’ve reached level 3 (Red level).

Now for the hardest challenge of all and your chance to save princess Peach! In this final challenge, you will need to create two staircases. Using the last two sections of code, you can activate them one after the other by pressing the “3” and “4” keys on your keyboard. Here’s your challenge:

• The staircases will have to be just in the right order in order to get you past the obstacles.
• Make sure to take care of Bowser before trying to get too far ahead.

Bonus Challenges - Try Them!

1. Try clicking on the other sprites and make small changes to the code and see what happens.
2. Can you make Mario move faster? Or jump higher?
3. Can you make your fireballs more powerful? Try it out!
